The Department

The Geography department at Whalley Range 11-18 High School presents a wide range of learning opportunities and experiences for all abilities as we endeavour to present the subject in an interesting and meaningful way.

In the Geography department we aim to help you:

to understand the environment and to know your world through fieldwork
to make wise decisions and development concerns
to develop a wide range of work related skills
to use computers or analysis and presentation
to understand other cultures in UK and throughout the world
to know where places in the world are

Facts that Year 9’s should know about GCSE Geography

Geography is the UK’s most popular optional GCSE
Geography links extremely well with specialist science and arts subjects, so it is ideal for a balanced curriculum
Geography has one of the highest rates of graduate employability, being highly valued by employers

Key Stage 4 Curriculum (AQA Specification B)

The United Kingdom - Rivers, environment, energy and urbanisation
European Union - The Mezzogiorno in Italy, tourism in Spain, economics of Europe
Wider World - Amazonia, the Ganges Delta and Japan
Global Issues -Aid, development, population and global warming.

GCSE Breakdown

Exams - 75 %

The exams will assess knowledge / understanding and skills connected with the above topics

Coursework - 25 %

Coursework will be a study of the local urban environment contrasting Chorlton, Manchester and Whalley Range. This will involve field visits in order to obtain data for the investigation. It must incorporate ICT skills.

Extra Curricular Activities

The Geography department offer a number of exciting extra curricular opportunities such as Eritrea Penpals, Geography Society and a weekly Geography/Travel and Tourism Clinic.

Year 8 students this year were also given the opportunity to take part in a one day field trip to the Peak District National Park.
